Why Oklahoma pools turn green so fast
Algae needs three things: warm water, sunlight and a gap in sanitizer. A central Oklahoma summer supplies the first two every day from June through August. The gap usually comes from something ordinary, like a week of vacation, a pump timer knocked out by a power flicker, a storm that washed in runoff and phosphates, or a salt cell that quietly stopped producing chlorine.
Once water is in the upper 80s, a pool can go from clear to hazy to green within a few days. Adding a bag of shock rarely fixes it. The algae is on the walls and in the filter too, and it comes right back once the chlorine burns off.
Our recovery process
- Assess. Test chlorine, pH, stabilizer and phosphates, check that the pump and filter are actually moving water, and decide whether the pool can be saved chemically or needs a partial drain.
- Remove debris. Pull leaves and sludge by net before they reach the pump.
- Shock and brush. Raise chlorine to the level needed for the pool's stabilizer, then brush every surface to break up algae so the chlorine can reach it.
- Filter hard. Run the pump continuously, and clean or backwash the filter repeatedly as it loads with dead algae. Heavy pools may be vacuumed to waste.
- Follow up. Return visits to hold chlorine, re-brush, clean the filter and clarify until the water passes an overnight chlorine-loss test.
- Balance and hand off. Final pH, alkalinity and stabilizer adjustment, then the pool moves into weekly service if you want it.

Green pool situations we see most
Home sale or new purchase. A vacant house sits through a summer listing, or a buyer closes on a home with a swamp in the backyard. Recovery plus a report on equipment condition gives you a clear starting point.
Post-storm bloom. Heavy rain adds phosphates and dilutes chlorine, and algae shows up two or three days later. Caught early, this is a quick, inexpensive fix.
Spring reopening. Pools that sat covered or barely running through winter often open cloudy or green in April and May. See seasonal opening.
Salt system failure. A scaled or worn-out salt cell stops making chlorine with little warning. We'll recover the water and check the cell, and if it needs replacing, equipment repair handles it.

How long does it take to clear a green pool?
Most green pools in the OKC metro clear in three to five days. A pool that has sat for months (black-green, visible debris, a smell) can take a week or more, and sometimes a drain-and-refill is the smarter call. We'll tell you which on the first visit.
How much does green pool cleanup cost?
Typically $300–$650 for a standard residential pool, depending on how far the algae has gone, pool size, the chemicals needed and how many follow-up visits it takes. Swamp-level pools that need debris removal or a drain can run higher.
Can I swim once the water turns blue?
Not until chlorine drops back into the normal range and the water is clear enough to see the main drain. Blue-but-cloudy water still has dead algae suspended in it, and chlorine levels during treatment are far above swimming levels.
